    Help the new guy!!

    Hi. Vtwin noob questions/concerns,

So I rode a vtwin the other day, and the bike(a 1999 millie) idles fine pulls strongly and good engine breaking,
The one thing that concerns me is that under acceleration it seems to shudder or shake at the bars when you get on the throttle but seems to settle as the revs rise!!!
Obv I don't know vtwins well enough to know the difference between a good or bad one. And just wondered if this is normal. Is thus just the engine getting up to speed. Or me being used to having in-line fours or is the engine on it way out.
    Ant advice appreciated.
    Thanks.

hi I'm new here to but welcome, what gear were you in when it was doing it, although these bikes have a lot of grunt I've found that they don't like big accelerations in a high gear from low revs. if it was i wouldn't worry to much, if not then id be looking at the chain tension/headstock bearing/cam chain tension, if the engine was pulling and running fine i wouldn't think the engine is an issue but someone may know better.

It seemed to do it in all gears. But just when initially accelerating, admirably this was probably in 4th or 5th but only sorta between 3/5000 rpm

Don't ride slow in a high gear ..to help change the gearing to 16/44 smooths it all out

Of course people have been know to have loose engine mountings

That's what I'm leaning towards thinking. Is there an easy way to tell whilst viewing the bike, obv with the seller with me, and is it just a case of tighten up and away ya go!

Pretty much, hard to tell if engine mounts without tools but I'll bet its because your not used to these, big torquey engines but don't like high gears low rev accelerations, ask for another go and keep it singing up through the gears 4th an 5th need her up about 6-7k redrat has a good point on gearing, ask if its got a lower front than standard, think it comes with 17 front normal but way better with smaller front
