Sorry for asking.... ..but it won't start!

Hi guys, I have just searched with a few different key words but not found exactly what I'm looking for, so am being a tart and asking outright (sorry).

T'other week I knocked the bike into first whilst putting the stand down and it stalled. It then wouldn't restart without bumping.

I rode the old girl for about 20 miles, stopped, parked and it re-started fine.

Left it a week, tried to re-start and I just got a 'click' and the needles dancing. Switched off, tried again and it just coughed into life.

Went out for 40 miles, stopped for petrol- same thing.

Rode another 5 miles. Stopped, went to restart 30 mins later and it span exactly as it used to.

If it wasn't for it stalling and failing to restart in those peculiar circumstances I'd assume it was the battery but now.....

    ..I just don't know. It's a 2003 RSV.

    What do you think guys?

Battery sounds weak, also best to replace the starter solenoid with a yamaha one, the standard solenoid is 50Amp and is not heavy enough, a new one is 27 from Wemoto, also buy a good battery like a YTZ14S-BS.

The bike will cut out if you put the stand down whilst in gear.

Don't keep using it like this or you will damage the sprag clutch, these must have good batteries in them or you will just give yourself other problems.

So about 60 for a good battery and 27 for a solenoid should see it good again i would reckon

As with Badger, i quess it's just coincidence. You may want to get an Optimate 4 too and keep the bike plugged in when not in use

That's reassuring... I thought that because I had effectively dropped it into gear that I may have caused some mechanical damage? Phew- coincidence I can live with!
Sadly I don't have electricity in my garage so I can't use an optimate, but I ensure I run the bike at least once a week.
Ok, I've got the battery code but what about the Yamaha solenoid? Which model is that from?

(I'll get these bits ordered ASAP)

Oh, and of course thanks for the help!

jon, the Yamaha part number is 4KD81940-00. Any yamaha dealer will get one for you. Or as Badger suggests, use wemoto mail order

I would reccomend keeping the battery on a trickle charger if possible.

Could you use a solar one like this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Solar-panel-to...d=p3286.c0.m14

Oooh, that's clever. I'll have to look into that.

Solar power eh? Whatever will they think of next?

Right, I've ordered the solenoid from Wemoto and got the battery from watchbatteries.co.uk (or something?)

I went through the wemoto battery list and the only YTZ14S I could find was a gel jobby for about 110. When I looked at the RSV/Tuono battery page it recommended a different unit with '12 ' in the part code.
The starting power of this was 90EN compared with 230EN for the '14. I don't know what EN is, but I'm sure I'd rather have 230 of 'em!

Let's hope this battery is the real deal when it turns up.

    Many thanks for everybodies help.

I believe the EN refers to the cold starting performance of the battery but i might be wrong

    Edit.

One thing to note is that the battery will be taller than the old one, my new battery sits tight against the underside of the seat so i dont require the bracket to hold it in place anymore.

    well who wouldnt

I would bypass the side stand switch anyway, its only a 5 min job and imo well worth it.
