    front sprocket question

Whilst my bike is in bits

I've been doing some other stuff, and cleaning parts I can't normally get to. Also have put a new 16t front sprocket on as I had some other bits I needed from Griff anyway......

In the course of changing the front sprocket I noticed this on the old one, the chain has bitten in to the, looks like rubber, edging bit, is that an original Aprilia sprocket and is it supposed to do that? No such trouble on the talon I've just put on!!

Also the 2 washers that interlock behind the sprocket bolt, are they supposed to be loosely fit? I noticed before I undid the bolt that they rattled when I touched them. Also they lok like they've been put on the other way round at some point (geartooth marks on both sides) so is it right that the little one goes on first and then the big one goes on rounded side outwards?

    Hi Simon.

Not too sure on the set up of the old model but the sprocket looks like it has had a chain run on it that is the wrong pitch for the sprocket (525 instead of 520 or something). Might be wrong but worth asking Griffer mate.

Recently changed sprockets on mine and had similar marks but not as pronounced on the original front sprocket but that maybe due to mileage (7,000). It had the rubber type coating you decscribe.

Can't remember if there were two washers (worried now) but put the conicle (sp) washer back same way came off, domed side out as you describe. Looks like someones put it back the wrong way on yours at some point judging by the marks.

I thought that, or maybe it's just too worn!! doesn't look much different from the new one though, I suppose the blades are only a tiny bit bigger on a 525? The chain is a 525 and I just put on a talon for 525, so it's no problem now. Just curious.

Exactly!!!! I'm pretty sure it's on the right way now, was a bit worried that the smaller washer was/ is supposed to be a tighter fit. Have ordered new ones (I did check that the parts fiche had the two washers on so that answers that question) and I'll let you know if no-one else comes up with the answer!!

just looking in haynes and it looks like the smaller washer goes on last! It probably doesn't matter much, i just didn't like the rattle from the movement between the washers

Hi Pieman the rubber is there to soften the noise the noise of the chain meeting the sprocket, Honda haye been fitting it for years & the wear on the robber is quite normal.

Is there no tab washer then? The lack of one online is troubling!
What strength thread lock do you suggest?
