    Oh nuts!

I think I may have just lunched the sprag clutch on the starter motor. I couldn't start the bike this morning even though the battery had been on the optimate all night so I rode my little B4 to work. When I got home this evening I had another go at starting the Mille and she wouldn't catch but she started making this horrible high pitched squeal as she tried to turn over. I immediately stopped and put her away. I assume this means the spag's dead? Anyone got any ideas?

A sprag is a one-way freewheel clutch used in a number of applications. It resembles a roller bearing with rollers shaped like a figure eight and cocked with a spring. When the unit rotates in one direction, the rollers stand up and bind because of oil friction, and when the unit is rotated in the opposite direction, the rollers slip or freewheel.Hope that helps

i must disappoint you, it is a common problem , on my first engine the sprag was gone, hoping that it will last at least that long as on the first engine @ 30000miles, but i guess it depends on how many times you start it.

It depends on how you start it, if you start it with throttle you will knacker the sprag, start the motor with the throttle shut, in fact don't touch it, pull the fast idle lever (choke for some ) and hit the start button, don't be blipping the throttle either on cold motor

So the heavy duty gel battery that I ordered came today so I decided to put it on the bike. Whilst I was there I thought I'd try to start it. Blow me down it started first time. Not the sprag clutch then! I can't tell you how relieved I am. I wonder what the horrible squealing noise was though...

    Thanks for the help guys
