    2003 rsv 1000 r

Just looking through eBay and saw this bike

I've now seen a few 2003 models registered as RSV1000R on the V5 just like this bike but with the later tail but standard Brembo wheels and Showa/Sachs suspension. Is this correct? Had a search but can find anything definite.

Nah m8, that's a vanilla RSV, not an "R". Sounds like the seller doesn't really know his model history through the Mille's evolution.

The wierd thing is I have seen a couple of 2003 RSVs apart from this one which have been in the same colour scheme and both of which were registered as RSV1000R on the V5 (as the eBay one is) - surely this can't be a coincidence?

I think i am right in saying.... The last ones of the the base model eg... RSV Mille, changed its name to RSV1000R as said before in 2003, you could still also purchase a RSVR with all the goodies in 2003, after that the new shape apeared and the base model turned to RSVR and the model with all the goodies was then called the factory.... Simples.

That certainly explains things perfectly, thanks! Manufacturers seem to like making things complicated...

The only difference bodywork wise between base and R models is colour schemes and a bit of Carbon. The shape of the body is the same. The smaller tail would make it pre 2001

    Power difference = 000000000000000

Griff (Fusebox) told me the story of the RSV1000R last year when he saw mine. In 2003, Aprilia dealers sold more new bikes than were actually allocated to the UK from Aprilia. The solution was to take 50 bikes that were destined for export to Japan and reroute them to Uk. These were designated RSV1000R in order to differentiate from the UK imports. He was even able to give me the chassis numbers (which matched mine) as at the time he was still with Aprilia. Hope that helps!

Are all the '03 RSV1000R's the same colour? They seem to be!

No, not all. Mine's the Silver Grey top with Red belly pan colour scheme. First registered March 2003 and shows on the V5 as 'RSV 1000 R'.

This probably also explains why the 'Country Code' label under the seat is stamped 'JJ'.

Are there any other colours? I wonder how many of the 50 are still about?

Were there any differences in specification between the 'J' and 'UK' models? Mine has a number of non-standard parts but I always thought they were added by previous owners and were not factory fitted.

From what I can see of the shock gas camber in your pic Crazyleg5 it looks like you only have a Sachs shock not Ohlins , but with out a clear pic of the shock I maybe wrong .
