Serious random light problem, please help !!

    Baffled by this.....

Used the bike for work this morning, all lights on and working fine, flicked to full beam all fine, flicked back to dipped and no lights at all ?? Pushed button back in for full beam and all lights back on ? Flicked back to dipped and all ok ? Back to full beam all ok, again though, no lights when back to dipped ? This time no lights came back on at all ?? Its just the headlights, indicators and rear lights are fine.

Now here's the really weird part, got home turned the ignition off and took the key out and bike was still running ?? Had to stall it to shut it down. Then when I locked the steering the side light was on which has never happened ever before ? But wont come on when ignition is on and lights on ??

Only thing thats happened to it out of the ordinary was on its MOT on thursday. The guy tried to start it before he'd fobbed the immobiliser and the starter button stuck in, so he he did fob it and turn the ignition on it started on the turn of the key. It flew through the MOT and all the lights were fine and have been fine until this morn ??

Has anybody got any idea what this might be or had a similar problem ? I really dont know where to start with it.

Any help at all would be very much appreciated

Ooh just the type of fault I like getting stuck into. If you get your Haynes manual and check the electrical drawings you'll be able to see which parts of the circuits become live with each click of the ignition barrel. Sounds very much like the contacts are shot in the barrel but impossible to say without seeing the bike.

Most likely the above (ignition barrel) but I had the fault where the engine kept running when my battery was low.
It also did some scary light show for me, I nearly went and got a priest.
It freaked me out but once I charged the battery up it was fine.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I dont have a Haynes for it, sure will be able to find online somewhere, I'm just not very good at the old electrical stuff. Do you think having a go at changing the barrel would be a good place to start ?

The battery is less than a month old and always kept on a trickle.

At the moment still no lights at all apart from the tiny little one at the top of the headlights when ignition off and in lock position with light switch on. Turn light switch off then no lights ??

First problems Ive have with it in 3 years so cant grumble too much !!

So took the bike apart tonight and this is what I found........

Something has obviously caused it to short like that. Will I need to replace the whole loom or get away with a new connector block ? All fuses still ok too.

Without seeing your bike it's hard to diagnose a fault but from your pics I would say that there are seperate issues.
The multi-plug would definitely affect your lights but the starting issue you mentioned has to be a seperate issue all together I would say and repeating myself, without seeing the bike I would suspect the barrel possibly.
The plug on my 02 mille was similar to yours above but not as bad as I caught it early so I cleaned it all up and refitted. I would suggest cutting the affected wires from both ends of the plug and socket and crimping on a suitable bullet crimp remote from the multi-plug.

As for the last pic re suspected bodge- Its hard to see from your pic but I believe thats a diode conected in parallel with the indicator relay which allows the indicators to operate correctly when connected to an alarm /immobiliser, so not a bodge more a corrective measure.

    Thanks for the reply Dave.

The barrel seems fine, no wires scorned or burnt anywhere along the loom from it. The bike started on the turn of the key because the starter button was stuck in. Would that of caused a lighting issue ? But strange I could take the key out and it still ran ? Im clueless with electrical stuff so your help is really appreciated. Ill try reconnecting as you suggested and see what happens.
    Once again, thanks

Sorted ! Cut the bad wires and rejoined and everything works ok, turns off on the key too, strange. Fingers crossed it wont happen again !
