Guy on ebay, they arrived today and he has agreed to take them back.

On another note I decided to attempt valve clearence checking today.. turns out some one has half inched my 5mm allen socket so couldn't check the front one, will be a trip to a tool shop tomorrow after work for that. I cant seem to find in the manual what the tolerances are?

I have these results for the rear looking at it as if you were sitting on the bike..

Hopefully oil and plugs will arrive tomorrow, looking forward to resetting the service light (sad) lol

I tried to move the throttle bodies out of the way but what appears to be a vacuum pipe was connected on the right hand side what is this?

I hope the shims don't require changing...

Is it Ok to remove it temporarily? Should be I guess as its just an air feed as far as I know.. Will give me a bit more room to work with the TB's off to one side.. Tested removing the plugs today which went smoother than expected, much easier than on my previous bike anyway - CBR400 nc23 (need borrowers hands) and Fireblade - Involved hand and finger contortion

Hi mate, got a set of calipers and Allen socket. The front bolt behind the roads is a **** to get off!

re measured all clearances as I was very tired last night. Unfortunately I do need to remove the cams and start measuring. Would ideally like to get ir all measured up tonight and work out what shims I need but not very confident removing the cams.

Know of any good guides? I have read good and bad things about cable toes but it sounds good to me. How can I stop the chain slipping low down?

    bummer.
hook some wire or string around the cam chains and tie it off somewhere so they dont drop inside the cases!
taking cams off should be ok.

yeah looks to be more complicated than I thought.
Apparently Gabro over on http://www.apriliaforum.com has a full comprehensive guide to doing shims so might be worth a PM to him.
You can ask about a chip while you are there too.

Does look tricky... ideally need someone who has done it before to hold my hand lol and to have a shim kit in my garage..

Could it do any damage if I left it for a 1000 miles or so? Hmm

Damage from tight shims could be burnt valves which you do not want!!
but its up to you 0.05mm (2 thou) is probably going to be ok but its your bike not mine.
They are out of spec but there will be some safety factor on those numbers. how much though is unknown.

Know what it's like when I did mine for the first time, real pig of a job but as you have the covers off you may as well do it, I wouldn't ride mine with those clearances, not good. One quick tip, I was told to try and manually fill the hydraulic chain tensioners before re-fitting them, I wouldn't, I pushed the pin in too far & fucked one of them up 40.00 later. She rattled a bit for a couple of seconds when it first started up whalst the tensioners filled with oil but no harm done.

Hmmm. . It's back together for now.. going to order a shim kit when I find the right set and get some more advice. Didn't want to risk messing the timing up. Only took an hour to get it back together..

I have done clearances on my old bikes but twins are new to me..don't suppose anyone local who has done it before would be willing to help out?

How often is griff down south?
