    rev counter fault???

Hi everybody I'm a new rsv owner and new to the forum. I've purchased an RSV1000R on a 10 plate (not rsv4) I've been out on it about 5 times now, BUT the other night I was out on it with some mates! (good ride) and as I aproached a junction I pulled the clutch in to go down the gears and it stalled? so whilst still rolling I pressed the start button and she fired up again (has not done it since) BUT now whilst on tick over the rev counter is showing about 500 rpm (needle only moves slightly from the stop) but the revs sound normal, about (1000-1200rpm). It seems to rev normally ie whilst riding etc I wondered if it was to do with the rev limiter coz I did hit the limiter not long before it stalled (was set at 9000rpm)? but I've reset it at 10500 and its made no difference. the only time she ticks over showing 1000rpm is when she's cold and as soon as the temps up the needle drops below? I was given 3 KEYS with the bike 1 key being a MASTER to reset the ecu but the guy told me NOT to use that I'd fry the ecu so I'm unsure how to use it or if that would even work. ANY IDEAS GUYS AND GIRLS?

sounds like the idle being set too low, unfortunately i dont believe its something easily adjusted on the newer models so your best bet is taking it to a dealer and asking them to set the idle speed up properly (possibly a throttle body sync/balance to)

i had a similar problem albeit not quite so bad (1000rpm instead of 1200rpm idle) and i checked the throttle cable slack (it was a bit looser than should have been) and just remember to not completely let go of the throttle when im slowing down so much
careful if you mess with the cable though, it needs to close fully!!

i dont know what a master reset key would do to the ECU but i would be very wary of doing such a thing without researching all the possible consequences

also the reason it idles a bit higher when cold is the automatic choke

Hi thanks for your reply. the bike sounds like it idles spot on! it just says its really low? I don't actually think its as low as it says it is. before the other night it idled the same BUT showed 1000rpm's on the counter? now the needle hardly moves when idling unless cold (choke on) then its nearer the 1000rpm mark. I know rsv's have been known for having problems with there electrics (ie clocks etc) but hadn't heard of this problem? hence posting this. I didn't know if it was a simple fix like disconnecting the battery for a few mins or if using the master key would reset things tried getting hold of the guy I bought it off to ask why he's got a master key and why or how to use it? with him telling me not to use it? but he's on holiday. so really hoped somebody on here would throw some light on the job?

    Google is your friend.
Master key is used to teach the immobilizer new keys so if you ever need a replacement key it will recognize the little chip in it.

If you seriously think the needle is not displaying correctly i suggest starting the engine up and seeing how responsive it is, if there is a genuine delay in the engine revving up and the needle moving maybe thats something worth investigating.

Sounds like the usual low idle symptoms to me though.
