    full bike check

    Hi guys,

I picked up an 05 RSV-R the other week and so far I've had quite a few issues, which I put down to the previous owner neglecting the bike completely. After only a few days riding the rear brake seized breaking everything from brake pads to brake disc/piston seals etc. I checked the tyre pressure today on the bike and the front has 42psi, rear 22... so It's probably got a puncture (42 on front seems far too high ?). I've booked it in for 12,500 mile service but I still think the bike needs more love, so what could I do to help prevent any more issues. Replace all the oils in the bike, rebuild front brake calipers. What else could I do, or get a mechanic to do on it's due service.

The bike also doesn't idle well and will stall on idle when warm unless I very slowly let the revs down. I'm taking it around Europe in August so I need to get it mechanically sound again.

Who you booked it in with?.
Aprilia performance will do a full service with valve check for a lot less than some other shops.

If the bike is having a full service I'd expect oil change ,brake / clutch bleed etc etc and should find any other big issues

I would like to be able to take it to aprilia performance but I live down near Plymouth, but if you think it would be far better to use an official dealer I could ride the bike to Exeter where there is one. At the moment it's just booked in with a local mechanic who said they can do the valve clearances, but they are not what you would call specialists.

Me personally being West country myself I would give the dealer in Exeter a miss if I had other options. (I guess you mean SP) PGH in Torquay were better and often had bikes that SP couldn't fix and sent down there. Unfortunately PGH dropped the dealership a few years back. I'm sure SP are competent generally but a few locals and mates have less than glowing stories to tell after work done there.

On the subject of aprilia performance, they have a mobile service day coming up near Dorchester or will do one anywhere if there is enough interest. They have happened in Bodmin before now.
You won't get a better service than them, Griff who owns it is ex Technical manager at Aprilia and many of the dealers still go to him for advise rather than aprilia Uk. Rolls Royce service but not at Rolls Royce prices.

Yes Spoonz, I was looking to use SP as it's the nearest Aprilia dealer to me. Thanks for the feedback on SP, I don't know any Aprilia owners so haven't had any feedback of dealers til now. I've emailed AP to book the bike on the 29th at Dorset. I've only ever had issues with motorbike mechanics so would be over the moon if AP do a good job. Having to ride a longer distance for a better service is a small price to pay.

How easy are the fans to replace. I was putting in bike coolant because of course the previous owner ran it dry and I realised the left hand side fan has completely seized

Happened to me a while back. Just like you, discovered the LH fan was seized on refilling the cooling system with subsequent engine run-up. A very looooong 1/4" extension is useful for the bolts! It also explained why I'd had a mysterious main fuse failure, then everything checked out OK, some time previously! I found a replacement on Ebay for 10 - the new price is over 100 IIRC!

A tool kit I ordered from amazon arrived day early with a long extension, 10 minutes after I managed to get the fan out with a lot of hassle . Brand new replacements are always ridiculously priced, I picked up a 2nd hand fan for 25 of eBay.

After all that effort of switching the lh fan over I've got the same problem. It's partially seized against the fucking radiator
