    Help! Won't start

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. I just picked up my first RSV 1000R (2005) and it ran fine the other day, then went to start it the next day and.... nothing. So, my battery has plenty juice (gauge says 11 volts) if I turn the ignition on everything lights up, then all the lights turn off except for the red general warning light and the oil pressure light. side stand up, hit the start button, nothing. like nothing at all, no noise, no attempt to turn over, just nothing. none of the lights dim or anything. I put it into diagnostic mode and it said ECU 0, which I take to mean no codes. Any ideas? I'm super frustrated, i just want to ride the damn thing.

    thanks,

11 volts is not plenty for these Rotax engines...you'll damage your sprag if it spins over on a low voltage as it will hit the compression stroke kick back and break the sprag.......charge your battery ASAP Check all your connections, earths as well...have you tried jump leads from a car

Haven't tried jumping it yet. Would a low-ish battery cause the warning light to go on? I'd think that it would still try to turn over, just weakly, no?

I wouldn't want to chance a slow turnover...the sprag is a one way starter ..if the engine kicks back...and it will ....as the battery won't have the power to throw the piston over the compression stroke you'll end up hundreds of dollars out of pocket for new parts.

The battery may be on its last legs...I'd upgrade to a ytx14s or whatever ...one with over 200 cold cranking amps

Update: battery is charged and fine. checked all obvious connections inside the fairings and they all seem fine. Problem hasn't changed. I spoke to the Aprilia dealer this morning and they told me "oh, EFI 0 is a baaaaaad code!" anyone know anything about this?

You mean just fiddle with the stop button on the grip? I'll try that right now.

This is extremley close to the issue I had a few weeks ago, only one thing is different.

Mine is not just the cut off switch, and its blowing the 15Amp fuse first in line at the junction behind the right headlight.(I cant find the chart with what that fuse runs).

I have all the fairings off right now, and I'm going to trace the wires tomorow, but any ideas of where to check would greatly help!

Edit: Adding to the confusion, I put a 20Amp in and it fired up. Let it run to recharge the battery a bit (5-10mins at idle) went to rev it to see if all was well and it popped the fuse at around 5k rpm. (15amp fuse wouldnt turn over hence the 20amp)

My 07 RSV-R auxiliary fuses are as follows:

    A. 5A - from ignition switch to lights relay, brake light, horn, parking lights

    B. 5A - from ignition switch to direction indicators and dashboard

    C. 5A - from battery to ECU

    D. 15A - from battery to speed sensor, fuel pump, starter relay, lambda sensor

    E. 15A - from battery to cooling fan relay, ignition coils, fuel injectors, air intake flaps, camshaft position sensor

    F. 20A - from battery to main and dip headlights

Fuses are lettered from the front towards the rear. The three 'fore and aft' fuses are spares. Best of luck!

Fuse E is the one that keeps popping.

I got it running on Saturday, rode for about 50 miles no issues, then getting on it a bit on an on ramp it popped again and left me on the side of the road. Tried popping a new fuse in and it blew out too. Wouldn’t start again...

I've heard people talking on here about malfunctioning coils? Would that be intermittent like this? I can’t think of anything that would work one day, then just go out the next... Unless it was failing internally, slowly.

Im a vehicle forum regullar, and for the sake of others searching issues like I tried to...

The issue with my bike was a faulty coil, upon warming up it would begin to missfire causing the engine to shut off and pop the fuse to protect the bike. I ended up having to go to a local shop to do the diagnostic, which in the States is hard to find. Luckily for me they have worked on Aprilias in the past.

An interesting sidenote, if anyone needs to replace the coils. The same exact coil used in our bikes is the same coil pack used for a Chrysler Crossfire (during the Chrysler Benz merge they used Benz engines) This pack was $160USD, the same "OEM Aprilia" part was $300USD.

Now to get back on the road!
