    Gearing mod ?

I'm thinking of doing 'the' gearing mod, whilst replacing chain/sprockets, if i go with 16/42 what chain will i need ? and how big a change would this make to gearing ? as i do commute on it so don't want to knock mpg to much!

mate 16/42 with a std change is no probs, mpg will ghardly be affected. my personal choice for the road is 16/44 with a chain 2 links longer, lots of low down grunt and a top end of 170 mph.
    cheers

yeah 16/44 best for me, tho my mate has just gone 15/46 mainly for track, tho I wil be interested to hear from him if its usuable on the road and what top end the 46 will give him.
Mind you i'm a bit pissed off that my race scrubbed racetechs which are 190/55's is chamfering the rear tyre, mebbe I will go for a 520 conversion. I deffo like how the 55 profile tyre handles.
    cheers CK

My mate had an SP for a few years and covered horrendous miles on it, he tells me that his used to eat sprockets and chains in 3K.

What's the best to buy chain and sprocket wise, I assume that as I ride for what I consider to be fast road the 16/44 is the way with a standard chain with two additional links?

Correct me if I am wrong.

3k on a chain and sprocket kit, then something was wrong. Either he's a bit over zellous on the truth or the chain and sprockets didn't in fact need replacing unless they were very cheap ebay specials ! Quality chain and sprockets like DID and Afam, if regularly cleaned and lubed should last 15000 miles or more

16/44 is the way to go with a 110 link chain on pre 2003.5 RSV Mille. DID 525 X ring professional gold with Renthal sprockets is my prefered choice

    Legs,

Knowing him well it would have been an Ebay special possibly made in China too!!!!

All his riding was done in pretty heavy London traffic too, so lots of stresses on the drive chain and sprockets.

Thanks for the advice, will be changing the rear sprocket for a 44 soon. Previous owner had new DID 525HV 110 chain and 16/42 sprockets fitted April '08'.

(Also noticed on the invoice that the Aprilia dealer reported that the revs increased when on left hand lock - can't believe that the last owner spent all that money with them and they couldn't be bothered to adjust his throttle free play)

I agree amb, it certainly makes you wonder about sheer inept of some dealers
