    which engine?

just as an exercise, if i had to swap engines for some reason in an early mille, is there a point where the engines changed enough for them not to fit. or are they all the same basic engine?

i was just thinking if a later, more powerful engine came up at the right price on fleebay it would be worth buying.

i've been browsing through the forums and basically understand that as the years went on the power went up, so i think it would be easier to just swap the engine complete as opposed to throttle bodies or head swaps etc?

    any thoughts chaps?

The earlier engine had 2 spark plugs per cyl so it would be a bit of work to fit a later engine as they use 1 plug per cyl, different looms etc. I'm sure there are posts about this but if you want a straight swap into a <04 Mille go for 03/02 engine with the bigger valves (pre 02 i think has smaller valves) and 2 plugs.

surely you would only need to change the coils? (ecu would only trigger one spark just the 2 coils fire 2 plugs)

i would of thought/hoped the looms would of been the same with only minor changes etc.

i can imagine the sensors and plugs might change to suit more modern technogadgetery.

but the basic engine lump should swap straight in

Yea, and mine is an 03 and still has 2 plugs per head, so the big valve head years are a little hazy, no specific date when they came in I dont think.

Yours is the older 'big valve' head. The facelifted 04 onwards have single plug heads. The older engines with small valves have painted rocker cover the larger valved ones have unpainted covers. On paper there is a 2 bhp increase between the 2 older gen engines

Ah right so mine is a big valve head, but still with 2 plugs? Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Now I'm confused, my rocker covers are unpainted (which colour should they be) but have been told that my engine is the small valve version (twin plugs)

What year is your bike? Think it was '03 that the big valve heads started to come in.

Post 04 bikes have magnesium heads which have to be painted as Magnesium corrodes QUICKLY.

Fitting a post 04 engien certainly poses some issues with wiring.

Ie. only 1 temp sensor feed to ecu. pre 04 has 2
Different injectors if you use later tb's and different crank pickups etc etc etc.

Post 04 bikes are offset in the frame compared to earlier bikes so you may have slight chain alignment issues unless you run offset sprockets.

It ain't plug and play but not undo able.

so 03 engines are the latest that are an easy swap.

    cool

at least now we know if one of our earlier motors goes pop.

and it's not that important if it's a big valve or small valve motor unless your after ultimate HP.

the main thing was actual engine fitment issues i suppose, now you say the 04> motors have a slightly different position in the frame it makes choices simpler

    nice one
