Dinit & it works! Brill thread and thank you very much. I used the old sensor housing to mount the new one. After cutting off the wire output end and the end of the sensor the old one just pushed out. I wrapped tape around the inside thread of the new sensor to take up slack and (after getting the sensor head as close to the bolts as poss) 'lock tited' it all up.

Well it did work! Just had a puncture and took wheel out to replace tyre. Put wheel back in and now speedo does not work. I may have clouted the sensor with the disc; how much impact can these sensors take? I didn't notice if it was happening before but a red LED is on with the ignition on on the sensor; is this significant?
    Still a brilliant 'fix' !

From the original post I'd say the LED is indicating that it is detecting something, if it's on constantly then something is wrong (maybe been knocked too close?)

First post of this thread has the link mate No idea why it's reading a bit off, was it doing the same with the std bolts?

Does the red LED on the end of the sensor come on and go off exactly once as each bolt head passes the sensor? Is your bracket really solid? Any movement/vibration of the sensor will cause problems which are likely to show themselves at speed.

The red LED is on all the time when the ignition is switched on, even with the sensor off the caliper and held away from the bike.

I wish I had seen this post sooner, I bought my rsv recently and the same problem occurred to me. I tried a few sensors from some machines we had at work and was very excited to see the speedo working instead of spending 84 on a new part. But as I pulled out of the garage and rolled down ghe ramp I was pretty sure I wasn't doing 120mph lol so I had the wrong type of sensor, I wish I had stuck with testing others out instead of buying one though, but I was just too keen to get out on it. Excellent info though im sure others will learn a lot from it. Good post and pictures..

well my 3rd or so official sensor died, finally got around to using the one of these i had ordered last year

took quite a while to figure everything out (it needs to be really close to sense stuff) and once i had got it all put together i was hit by a double whammy of problems... domed bolt heads reading twice like others have had.. and one bolt that apparently wanted to stick out by a little tiny bit more and whack the sensor on every turn >.<

after a few pathetic attempts to "fill" the bolt heads and make them read properly i got some new bolts which promptly fixed both issues and works flawlessly since

my only wonder is what i look like zooming past with that little LED blinking constantly thanks for a great guide!

I just did this mod because I was getting intermittent speedo readings.
The new sensor seems to work (led blinking correctly) but my speedo is just reading 0 .
    Any ideas guys?

Ignore previous. I Just realised I need an NPN sensor.

How does this make a difference actually? Does the computer not just count pulses?

I know it's been said, but the sensor had to be REALLY close to the bolt heads for mine to work.

having a go at this myself - sensor is currently siliconed into the original housing and seems reasonably solid - I thought the silicone might even help with dampening vibrations. Am finding that whatever bolts I use it's fine up to about 40-50mph and then goes tits and then simply reads 0 mph. Not sure if the sensor is gubbed or my mount is not solid enough.

fwiw the bolts are about 0.3mm away from the sensor face at the moment.

    Any ideas?

    Yes...and no.
I have the same problem, although the speedo reads up to about 130 mph then goes to 0 mph even when I am accelerating. Only on a track day of course, and it's not too much bother but if any one has a fix I'd like to know?

I could cope with it working up to 130

I did this mod and mine is the same, it's fine till about 130 then reads not a lot but i figure for how cheap a fix it was i can live with it and if it ever goes really wrong i can just get another sensor for about 5. I did wonder if it was just reaching the limit of hte sensors being able to read the speed? i know that it should work but as i say never bothered me that much.

The specs on mine say they switch up to 800Hz which is fine (needs to read up to about 190Hz I think....) but was struggling at 50-55Hz ish. I figure the cheap chinese sensors (may well be making sensors for other brands) probably suffer in the quality control department.

have ordered another sensor to try from another source

Let us know if it's any better as if it's a cheap swap i might get round to doing it at some point.
