    New guy blues

    Hello all.

I have just got myself an 02 registered Mille in hot red although I believe itís a 2000 bike.
Bought from a dealer in York with 16k on the clock and got delivered to me in Hertfordshire in the snow, looking at the previous MOT history the mileage looks genuine and it looks to have been stood for a good while in the last year.
I have ridden it a handful of times and she seems pretty sweet although I have noticed a fairly comprehensive amount of oil on the engine after taking off the fairings. Wet looking fresh oil along with older grungy stuff, annoying but I am hoping itís just crankcase gaskets. The stator side appears to be the worst culprit and I am hoping that itís where the stator cabling pokes through. Iíll replace the gaskets and have a look. Although it looks like the R/H has a leak also...(most of the bolts werenít torqued up to the correct settings though).
Itís due an oil change as I think the level is low and the clutch drags when itís cold.

Hope to pick your collective brains in the coming months with inevitable grief.

    Cheers

    Al

    Pictures please.

Like any bike and car if it's been badly looked after you can have problems. The sale of goods act should protect you, the bike wasn't fit to sell. Oil leaks and loose fasteners sounds as if it's been badly repaired. Right hand side possibly means it's had starter problems (the starter gears wear and are expensive to fix. )
Most likely leaks are the head rocker cover gaskets, which should be replaced after every valve clearance checks. They are quite expensive so many try to reuse the gaskets. The clutch probably only needs a bleed (how long was the bike stood for ? Do you have any history for the bike ?)
Buying bikes blind at the cheap end of the market is asking for trouble. There is a whole list of things that need checking, the rear shock linkage ceases if not regularly cleaned and re greased.
Never trust a second hand bike dealer !

    Ha ha,

Believe me I donít. I am pretty happy wielding the spannerís and Iím sure itís something easy. For all I know itís been leaking a little for ages and never cleaned. Nothing is obviously leaking anywhere except the crankcase areas, not the head gaskets or valve covers. Itís got no issues starting or running, overheating etc. Goes and stops great and all that.

Just a pesky oil leak....and the tank overflow pipes leaked as they had perished but I have fixed that.. the oil level is low and I reckon it just needs a bit of TLC. Iíve got gaskets now and a new oil filter. Iím gonna replace them and the il and see how I get on once I know itís all done right. Iíve had loads of older bikes with weird issues and I love troubleshooting it.

Iíll post photos once I work out how to do it.

    Cheers for the reply.

Just ending the thread. I think I’ve sorted it out. Changed the oil and filter with the right amount and I’ve cleaned everything. Looks like the oil had been repeatedly overfilled and made it from the air box, past the throttle bodies and over everything on the way down. Looks to be ok now.

    Cheers
